Why Botsrah instead of Bozrah?

Okay, so I was reviewing my last post and it occurred to me that someone may have forgotten about the Hebrew transliteration scheme I use.

In Hebrew, the letter "tsadday" is  the eighteenth letter of the alefbet and represents the "ts" sound as in our word "nuts" or the "dz" sound as in our word "adds," depending on the vocalization of adjacent consonants. The "dz" sound gave the initial rise of using the "z" character to transliterate the consonant in words like "Zion" and "Bozrah" when, for instance, the KJV was written.

Today, the "ts" is considered a closer match (in most cases) as a good transliteration for the "tsadday." Thus, you might find "Zion" transliterated as "Tsiown." (Remember: The Hebrew "o" sound is always the "o" with a circumflex, representing a nearly long "o" sound.) And, you might also find "Bozrah" for "Botsrah."

The other letter that gives Westerners a LOT of trouble is the `ayin (represented with a back apostrophe, represented as " ` ." This sound is technically different than the 'alef (represented with a regular apostrophe, as " ' ." The alef at the beginning of a word (and I choose to ignore it at the beginning of words for this reason) is the light explosive sound that we make when we say the words "egg" or "umbrella." We also say it in words that put two vowel sounds together without blending them, such as in our word "preamble."

The `ayin is similar with the exception that it is made in the back of the throat, like a "swallowed G." In fact, it is so similar to the alef, that Hebrew teachers and primers basically give up trying to make a difference and say that they are both "silent" letters. Even common Hebrew speakers in Isra'el will make little difference in pronunciation between the two.

I remember in Kindergarten a funny little song, called "Guh, Guh, Went the Little Green Frog." (Remember, this is back in 1963, and, yes, I am that old!) We were all encouraged to make this sound in the song as a way of mimicking the frog. I can also remember, when seeing the song spelled out, that it wasn't quite right. "Guh" is not the noise we were making, which was more of a loud, audible swallowing sound.

That's the `ayin. And, as transliteration schemes into English go, the transliteration scheme that the English of the 1611 KJV used made the same approximation. Thus, "`Aza" became "Gaza" and "`Amorah" became "Gomorrah." Most of the time when one sees a name that begins with a "G" when transliterated from Hebrew, it will be a name that begins with a gimmel. But, a few names that begin with an `ayin will also be transliterated to begin with a "G," but these few names actually begin with that funny little frog sound that we made in the song.

Botsrah, Edom

Now, for the prophecies against Botsrah:

Jeremiah 49:7-22
7 Concerning Edom, thus saith the Lord of hosts; Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished?
8 Flee ye, turn back, dwell deep, O inhabitants of Dedan; for I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, the time that I will visit him.
9 If grapegatherers come to thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? if thieves by night, they will destroy till they have enough.
10 But I have made Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: his seed is spoiled, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and he is not.
11 Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me.
12 For thus saith the Lord; Behold, they whose judgment was not to drink of the cup have assuredly drunken; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink of it.
13 For I have sworn by myself, saith the Lord, that Bozrah shall become a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all the cities thereof shall be perpetual wastes.

15 For, lo, I will make thee small among the heathen, and despised among men.

17 Also Edom shall be a desolation: every one that goeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss at all the plagues thereof.
18 As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the Lord, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it.
19 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan against the habitation of the strong: but I will suddenly make him run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?
20 Therefore hear the counsel of the Lord, that he hath taken against Edom; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitations desolate with them.

22 Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his wings over Bozrah: and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of Edom be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

1 Come near, ye nations, to hear; and hearken, ye people: let the earth hear, and all that is therein; the world, and all things that come forth of it.

3 Their slain also shall be cast out, and their stink shall come up out of their carcases, and the mountains shall be melted with their blood.

Isaiah 63:1-7
1 Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.2 Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat?
3 I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment.
4 For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.

5 And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me.
6 And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.
7 I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the Lord, and the praises of the Lord, according to all that the Lord hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.

Therefore, by the time that Yeshua` is ready to rescue His people from oppression, we can see that His garments are already stained read with the blood of those in Edom, specifically those in Botsrah.

Now compare this to Revelation 19:

Revelation 19:11-15
11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

This gives us the order that His clothes were already dipped in blood before He goes into "smite the nations" mode. Some have claimed that this was His OWN blood, but that is not said! Scripture DOES say, however, that "he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God," and that He said, "I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment."
I can't say for sure, but I would think that the controversy that He has with Edom and Botsrah is linked to Herod the Great and the slaughter of the children when he was attempting to murder Yeshua` after His birth. Herod was an Idumean, an Edomite.

Zechariah 12 through 14

Shalom, Mishpachah.

Okay, we've covered the Olivet Discourse fairly well. Now it is time to talk about other passages of prophecy.

Let's look at the passages that talk about Yeshua`s return:

Consider this question: Where will Yeshua` go first when He arrives? Some have suggested that, because of Zechariah 14:4, that the first point of contact will be when Yeshua` LANDS upon the Mount of Olives. However, we have other passages of Scripture that must also be satisfied.

Look carefully at the whole text of Zechariah chapters 12 through 14:

Zech. 12-14
12:1 The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.
2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.4 In that day, saith the LORD, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness: and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness.
5 And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength in the LORD of hosts their God.
6 In that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem.7 The LORD also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah.
8 In that day shall the LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the LORD before them.
9 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.
11 In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon.
12 And the land shall mourn, every family apart; the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart;
13 The family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family of Shimei apart, and their wives apart;
14 All the families that remain, every family apart, and their wives apart.
13:1 In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.
2 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.
3 And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD: and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth.4 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive:
5 But he shall say, I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.
6 And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.
7 Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.
8 And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.9 And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.
14:1 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.
2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.5 And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.6 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark:7 But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light.8 And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.10 All the land shall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem: and it shall be lifted up, and inhabited in her place, from Benjamin's gate unto the place of the first gate, unto the corner gate, and from the tower of Hananeel unto the king's winepresses.
11 And men shall dwell in it, and there shall be no more utter destruction; but Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited.12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.14 And Judah also shall fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the heathen round about shall be gathered together, gold, and silver, and apparel, in great abundance.
15 And so shall be the plague of the horse, of the mule, of the camel, and of the ass, and of all the beasts that shall be in these tents, as this plague.
16 And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.17 And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain.
18 And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.
19 This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.
20 In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD; and the pots in the LORD'S house shall be like the bowl's before the altar.
21 Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holiness unto the LORD of hosts: and all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and seethe therein: and in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the LORD of hosts.

Within this passage of Scripture, we have very descriptive phrases that speak to the future; I have highlighted the phrases and statements and underlined when Yeshua` actually comes back. Thus, verse 3 comes before verse 4 in Zech. 14. And, there is some time involved between the two verses. Yeshua` doesn't LAND upon the Mount of Olives, although He does set foot there.

Notice, for instance, in 12:7 above that the LORD rescues the inhabitants of Y'hudah before He rescues the inhabitants of Yerushalayim.

Next, we will see why I say there are other events that happen AFTER He arrives in the Middle East and BEFORE He sets foot on the Mount of Olives.

The Olivet Discourse, part 12

This is the last segment on the Olivet Discourse and it will go fairly quickly since all that is left is Matthew 24:45-25:46, all from Mattityahuw's account of Yeshua`s "ministry":

24:45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.
48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;
50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,

The Olivet Discourse, part 11

Shalom, mishpachah!

Moving on, we have the next section within the English translation of the Greek harmony of the accounts of the Olivet Discourse:

However, watch yourselves so at no time your hearts be weighed down with hangovers and intoxication and distractions of this life, and that the day stand upon you unexpectedly. For it shall come as a trap upon all those who dwell on [the] surface of the whole earth.  Therefore, stay awake! Pray at every occasion that ye may be counted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass and to stand before the Son of Man.  Watch out, stay awake, and wish forward to God! For ye don’t know when the time will be!

Here, His disciples to whom He was actually talking that day were warned to watch out for themselves; so that the Day wouldn't spring upon them unexpectedly as a trap! There are five recurring phrases that are key to the rest of the Olivet Discourse:

Stay awake! (Agrupneite!)
Watch! or Be on guard! (Greegoreite!)
Look! (Pay attention!) (Blepete!)
Take heed! (Prosechete!)
Pray at every occasion! (En panti kairoo deomenoi!)

He wasn't saying that THEY would be around when He, the Son of Man, returned, but to be sure that they were having the right attitude and expectation for His return! (This concludes Luke's account of this particular prophecy.)

As a man journeying abroad who left his household and gave to his slaves the authority and to each one his [own] assignment and commanded the front door guard to stay awake guarding, therefore then YE guard for ye don’t know when - what timeyour master, the master of the household, will come, at dusk or midnight or cockcrowing or at dawn! Otherwise, he will come suddenly to find you sleeping! But that which I say to you, I say to all: Stay awake!

This concludes Mark's account of this prophecy. I always thought that the phrase "at dusk or midnight or cockcrowing or at dawn" might be any time of the day or night, but in actuality, all of these are times of the NIGHT! "Dusk" is when the night begins; "midnight," of course, is in the middle of the night; "cockcrowing" is early in the morning when the roosters first begin to crow, usually between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m, and "dawn" is the end of the night as the sun is coming up.

But know this: that if the householder had known in what watch the burglar would come, he would have watched better and would better not have allowed [him] to break into his house. Through that [analogy], ye be ready, too; the Son of the Man shall come at such a time that ye won’t imagine.

"ALWAYS BE PREPARED" is more than just a Boy Scout motto; it was Yeshua`s command to His students. The rest of the prophecy all comes from Matthew's account, from 24:45 through 25:46:

Then who is the loyal and wise slave whom his master has made ruler over his household, to give them their rations at the appropriate time? Happy will be that slave whom his master will find doing such when he comes. I truly say to you that he shall make him controller over all his property.
 
But, if that evil slave shall say in the core of his thoughts, “My master delays to come,” and shall begin to abuse his co-slaves, but to eat and drink with the party animals, the slave’s master shall come in a day when he is not expecting him and at a time when he is not aware, and shall sever him and appoint his portion with the play-actors; weeping and grinding of teeth shall be there.

The Olivet Discourse, part 10

Shalom, mishpachah.

This next section is primarily from Matthew 24 with some influence from Mark 13:

But no man knows concerning of that day and of that hour, not even those messengers of the sky in (the) sky neither the Son but only my Father. But like the days of Noach (Noah) [were], in the same way will be also the Revealing of the Son of Man:

For like they in those same days that [were] before the Flood were munching and guzzling, marrying and arranging marriages, until that day Noach (Noah) entered into the ark, and were not aware until the Flood came and swept absolutely all away, so the Revealing of the Son of Man shall also be the same way. Then two shall be in the field: the one shall be received near and the other shall be sent forth. Two shall be grinding at the mill house: one (feminine) shall be received near and one (feminine) shall be sent forth.

Here, Yeshua` Himself said that, at the time He was prophesying, He didn't know the day or the hour. He said, no one knew, not the messengers of the sky, nor the Son. Only the Father knew when The Son of Man would return.

Some will claim, "Yes, but one can know the month or the year!" I don't think so. I believe that the intent of this statement was that no one would know the TIME of the Return. Even though I don't believe in a pretribulational rapture, I still believe that the Return cannot be anticipated to any precise degree. Just as a pregnant woman can know approximately when the child she is carrying will be born but cannot know the precise moment of the birth, so we can know an approximate time when Yeshua` will return, but cannot know the precise moment of His return. So, one doesn't know if the child will come sooner than expected, later than expected, or right on time, nor does one know how much sooner or how much later the child will be born! There's a wide range, from 23 weeks to 42 weeks (any later than that a doctor would probably order a C-section) for a baby to be born, even though the gestation period is normally 40 weeks.

Then, He likened the time of the Son-of-Man's Revealing to the days before the Flood during Noach's time. Life was going on as normal, and the general public went on their merry way until the Flood came and swept them all away!

As is the typical Hebrew mindset, Mattityahuw's (Matthew's) account then goes from the general statement into the particulars:

Two persons, probably men because the gender of "one" (Greek: "heis") is masculine singular, would be in the field. One would be received near (Greek: paralambanetai), and the other would be sent forth (i.e. to his doom, Greek: afietai).

Two persons, probably women because the gender of "one" (Greek: "mia") is feminine singular, would be grinding grain into flour by which to make bread. One would be received near (Greek: paralambanetai), and the other would be sent forth (i.e. to her doom, Greek: afietai).

However, this is NOT the "Rapture," as the Pretribulational Rapturists say, for it happens AT THE SECOND COMING, the Parousia, the REVEALING of the Son of Man! Some make the point that the word paralambanetai, coming from paralambanoo, is usually a positive, comforting word, while afietai, coming from afieemi, is usually a negative, indifferent word. Consequently, Pretribbers will claim that this proves that Yeshua` was speaking about the Rapture. However, the word pictures that these two words invoke are reminiscent of the last scene in Matthew 25, the King separating between the sheep and the goats:

31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:
33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
...

41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

So, the first group, the "blessed of my Father," are called along side of Him with the word "Come" while the second group are ordered to "Depart." Thus, although the same words are not used here, the activities are descriptions of these words.
