We’ve already looked at these verses somewhat for the sake of the gates, but now we need to see what they say about the light:
Rev. 21:23-26
23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.
25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.
26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.

Although this says that the city “had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it,” it does NOT say that there will be no more sun or moon.
Sometimes, evangelists and theologians will claim that it does. In fact, we have a VERY stretched view of prophecy touted today that goes WAY beyond the Scriptures. They have painted a picture where “there is no more time,” where the “sun and moon (and some claim, even the stars) no longer exist,” where “the old Heaven and the old earth have passed away,” and where we will live forever in a “new Heaven and a new earth” all re-created by God. They get all that from Revelation and do not bother to look up many other verses that might shed additional light on the matter.
Allow me to provide a few additional verses of Scripture that should be consulted on these points:
Psalm 72:1-20
1 Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king's son.
2 He shall judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with judgment.
3 The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness.
4 He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.
5 They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations.
6 He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth.
7 In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth.
8 He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.
9 They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.

12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

I believe the resolution is simple: The SURFACE of the earth and its sky will be subjected to fire and dissolved, however the whole planet will remain untouched. Thus, although the surface of the earth and the earth’s atmosphere will undergo dramatic changes by a deluge of Fire, the earth WILL abide forever. Furthermore, the sun and the moon will also abide forever, even if the city has no need of them. While the city may have no need for them, the rest of the planet WILL need them!
I believe we have a couple of verses that confirm this:
Isa. 24:21-23
21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.
22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.
23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in

Although personified in translation, the words “confounded” and “ashamed” are very interesting in Hebrew:
OT:2659 chaafeer (khaw-fare'); a primitive root [perhaps rath. the same as OT:2658 through the idea of detection]: to blush; figuratively, to be ashamed, disappointed; causatively, to shame, reproach:
KJV - be ashamed, be confounded, be brought to confusion (unto shame), come (be put to) shame, bring reproach.
OT:954 buwsh (boosh); a primitive root; properly, to pale, i.e. by implication to be ashamed; also (by implication) to be disappointed or delayed:
KJV - (be, make, bring to, cause, put to, with, a-) shamed (-d), be (put to) confounded (-fusion), become dry, delay, be long.

Thus, the words actually mean that the moon shall be made to blush, and the sun to pale. I believe that this means that the moon will be given a reddish hue and perhaps mixed-up, too, in its phases, and the sun shall pale by comparison, the sun shall be out-done “when the LORD of hosts – ADONAI Tsva’ot – shall reign in Har Tsiyown and in Yerushalayim and before His ancients (His older ones) GLORIOUSLY!
This is the same Hebrew word for “gloriously,” kaavowd, as in the following passages:
Ex. 16:7-10
7 And in the morning, then ye shall see the glory of the LORD; for that he heareth your murmurings against the LORD: and what are we, that ye murmur against us?
8 And Moses said, This shall be, when the LORD shall give you in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full; for that the LORD heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against him: and what are we? your murmurings are not against us, but against the LORD.

Therefore, when the LORD shall reign gloriously before His ancients, He will literally reign brightly! So, brightly that He will outdo the sun and create a reddish hue to the moon through the jasper walls of the New Jerusalem and mix up its phases!
The second passage of Scripture is …
Isa. 66:22-23
22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.
23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

The sun is needed to determine a day, and every seventh day of the week is Shabbat. The moon is needed to determine when a new moon occurs. So, this verse says to me that the sun and the moon will exist for the new earth and its new atmosphere, and again, this makes sense. For we are told that the city doesn’t need the sun and the moon, but the rest of the planet will need them!
